Volunteers for East Harlem Block Nursery

OACny is seeking two (2) volunteers to assist East Harlem Block Nursery (EHBN) in finding a new site to expand their childcare services. East Harlem Block Nursery is a grassroots education based not-for-profit providing early childhood education to pre-school age children within the East and Central Harlem communities. As EHBN is expanding, their current site of operation has become too small to accommodate their needs.

Volunteers should have a strong interest in design for early childhood education and knowledge of educational facility requirements and commercial building code. This is an exciting opportunity to help create an adaptable design model for early childhood education that could be implemented throughout NYC and the five boroughs. The volunteers will be working under the guidance of the project coordinator.

  • Survey existing EHBN Center #1 and produce existing floor plan to review possible renovation plans.

  • Produce design layouts to determine feasibility of other spaces under consideration for the expansion.

  • Exploration of prototypical classroom design, including multiple learning environments.

  • Exploration of furniture plans and material research for classroom design .

  • Research community-driven design and spaces for neighborhood and community interaction.

Phase II - Design + Construction for East Harlem Block Nursery Expansion

  • Implementation of design research.

  • Produce schematic design for the future renovation/ build-out of the center.

  • Layout of interior and material application.

Preferable experience include:

  • Experience in schematic design and construction documents.

  • Experience in the design of early childhood educational facility.

  • Interest in education and environment.

  • Strong organizational skills and work well in a team.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling programs (Sketchup, Rhino or Revit).
