Volunteer Day with Concrete Safaris

OACNY is proud to partner with Concrete Safaris who will be hosting their 4th annual JungleGym Race event, on Saturday, June 25th, at Jefferson Park in East Harlem.

JungleGym Obstacle Race - The race, held in East Harlem’s Jefferson Park and across three city blocks, aims to engage elementary school children in the transformation of outdoor spaces not traditionally used for play. Children participate in race design, construction, promotion, fundraising, volunteerism, and healthy competition. As part of Concrete Safaris' City Surfers afterschool program at PS 83 and PS 182, children from 2nd - 5th graders, start planning and designing all details for this event as early as October and through-out the school year.

Proceeds from the event will provide two hundred 7-12 year-olds from Upper Manhattan with 5-day/week, year-round, after school and summer programming in the next five years, beginning in East Harlem. With your support, we can ensure that children living in Upper Manhattan have access to high-quality, outdoor play and education in their neighborhoods and parks.

OACny partners with individuals who operate on a volunteer basis, in an effort to offer design solutions for the betterment of our local communities. OACny in partnership with Concrete Safaris are currently looking for volunteers who will help to check-in racers, setup and break down stations and the course, manage specific obstacles, distribute water, awards, and swag bags, and oversee sections of the race and day's activities.Come out and have some fun!

Concrete Safaris is a model for social change in which children learn how to alter the physical world around them by navigating New York City's infrastructure, becoming confident, experienced, effective leaders at an early age, committed to their health and environment. 7-12-year-olds have met with NYC Housing Authority officials to secure land for gardens and then grown thousands of pounds of produce, testified in favor of bike lanes in their neighborhood and then created bike routes for neighbors to enjoy, designed an annual obstacle race and carnival for their community, and led workshops on health topics of their choosing.
