Summer 2018 - Spring 2019 (Design)
Summer 2019 (Installation)
Washington Gardens is located in the East Harlem neighborhood on 97th Street between 3rd and 2nd Avenues. The garden is managed by our long-term partner Concrete Safaris, whose mission is to promote physical activity, encourage children to get outside and discover new worlds of possibility.
The main goals for the garden were the creation of an interactive learning space for the children to promote a healthy lifestyle by growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and getting lots of fun exercise. The design included a learning circle and a green wall to serve as an education area. New composting bins and work/demonstration tables help to facilitate the day-to-day functions of the garden. A reading area is covered in a half-dome of ivy to provide the children a safe space to dream in the garden. A trellis will connect these areas and serve as a pathway between.
